West Coast were competitive for most of the game but four straight Hawks goals to start the final term saw the "home" side open up a seemingly insurmountable 26 point lead. West Coast then staged a late charge to get the margin back to 7 before running out of time to steal a what would be a remarkable win for captain Darren Glass's 200th game. Mitch Brown gave up 6 goals to opponent Lance Franklin but was hampered by a broken thumb suffered before halftime.

From the coach[]

"Disappointed. It was another real good hard game, close. We let it slip out of our reach and we nearly pegged it back. We obviously came here to win the game and we couldn't win it so it's disappointing, but we're satisfied with the intensity of the players, for sure.

"...Well, the difference of a goal in the end was probably Franklin and the ability to create and win those one-on-ones. He's an awesome presence and as much as Kennedy almost matched him in the end, I think Franklin was probably the difference.

"...They're learning a lot at the moment, they're learning a lot from the way Darren Glass is playing the game and having Daniel Kerr back out there and Andrew Embley and Coxy, the way they're going. That's really helping our young players learn about what is required. I thought the way Embley and Glass threw themselves into contests today was fearless and really set a great leadership example."[2]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"In a game in which the lead changed five times, West Coast turned a one-point deficit at half-time into a two-point lead with a quarter to play.

But their defensive swarming looked to have taken a heavy toll midway through the final term when Hawthorn surged to a 26-point lead after Franklin's sixth goal.

Josh Kennedy, who had proved to be Josh Gibson's master for much of the match, provided late hope with two goals to take his tally to four, but the Hawks buffer was too great."[3]

The Age[]

"For most of the afternoon, this was a dour scrap. John Worsfold has clearly changed tactics this year, shedding his desire to play one-on-one football in preference for the league-wide trend of zoning. This ensured the Eagles remained in the game, even when the Hawks threatened to take control in the third term.

The Eagles had also attempted to unsettle a short Hawthorn defence by using talls Dean Cox, the impressive Jack Darling, Nic Naitanui and Quinten Lynch up forward. The tactic worked well in the first term when the Eagles impressed around the ground, crucially having the better of the contested possession.

The Eagles still led this category by three-quarter-time when they were up by two points but the Hawks would ultimately boast more individual brilliance."[4]
