West Coast went to the top of the table with a four-goal win over Hawthorn, kicking away in the third term and then withstanding a late charge to come away with the points. Peter Sumich recaptured some old form with seven goals and Andy Lovell racked up 34 possessions.

From the papers[]
The Age[]
"At one end of a packed Subiaco Oval on Saturday night was a resurgent Peter Sumich, winning the hard ball initially from veteran defender Ray Jencke and then from Hawthorn full-back Mark Graham, on his way to a seven-goal haul.
At the other end was the great Jason Dunstall being completely smothered by tall West Coast defender Fraser Gehrig. Dunstall ended the game with no goals, one mark, one kick and three handballs.
Around the ground, four West Coast teenagers and one first-gamer named Nick Stone, aged 24, were providing impetus in the ruck, through the centre and in defence.
And while Peter Matera was a late omission from the listed side, with an ankle injury, younger brother Phil was brilliant all over the paddock, booting four goals in the Eagles' 23-point win."[1]
