A weary West Coast was thrashed by the Blues, with the visitors never in the hunt after giving up eight goals in the first term and trailing by nearly 50 at the main break. The tireless John Annear had 34 possessions and two goals and Laurie Keene kicked six majors, but was reported for striking.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Before the onslaught of Carlton's sustained aggression, the Eagles' neat skills and polished disposal were almost superfluous. The Blues stormed what David Parkin terms the corridor within minutes of the match's beginning and held it, with a ferocity that bordered on the tribal, for the duration of the contest.

Carlton's traffic towards goal was fast and furious, and the vehicles it employed were interchangeable - initially Johnston but increasingly as the match progressed players such as Fraser Murphy, David Glascott and Paul Meldrum. It was liked a multi-pronged battering ram before which the West Coast defence splintered and then shattered.

In a normal match, you might see defences drawn and goals being scored by a single forward left unattended in the goal square on one or two occasions. On Saturday, that circumstance must have accounted for almost half the home side's 29 goals. It was as if Carlton's fierce and frenetic pace created a vortex which repeatedly sucked the West Coast defence towards its epicentre."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"Carlton was supreme in every facet of the game yesterday.

After an eight-goal first quarter, the Blues led by 48 points at half-time, and dominated all but 12 minutes of the third quarter.

The plight of the Eagles was not helped when they lost experienced former VFL players Ross Glendinning and Phil Narkle in the first half.

Glendinning has a minor leg injury, but the brilliant Narkle could be sidelined for up to two months with a suspected broken arm."[2]
