A wasteful West Coast suffered their first loss of the 2017 season, failing to take advantage of their dominance of general play during the first half and then struggling to hold a rejuvenated Richmond side in the second half. Their efforts were hampered by storms that hit during the third term, with the visitors less able to adapt to the changed conditions. Andrew Gaff led West Coast with 33 possessions and Mark LeCras looked dangerous throughout with three goals.

From the coach[]

"It was a game of momentum. I thought we probably missed a few opportunities in the first quarter, but our poor intent in the third really cost us. We probably should've been hurt a bit more in that third quarter. Hard-ball gets and the ability to stick your head over the ball when it really mattered went away from us in that third quarter in particular. Having said that, the game was still on the line up until the last five minutes. I get that you can't win every game and you can have ups and downs with momentum, but it was just too big a gap with our consistency in that area.

"I thought in the last quarter our numbers looked OK. In that last quarter when it was really wet it wasn't necessarily that. I thought for the most part of the whole game they had a little bit more of an edge around the footy.

"...You've got to give credit to Richmond. They elevated and we didn't respond. Momentum happens. Games every week have swings. Ours to turn things around wasn't quick enough to stop them. They got really good supply in the third quarter and to their credit, their forward-half pressure - which we scouted - was at its best and we couldn't penetrate."

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"A first-half arm wrestle became a war of attrition as sheets of rain hammered the ground after the main break.

Richmond simplified their method of attack and did everything they could to drive the ball forward as West Coast often persisted with handball in congestion.

The Tigers almost doubled their half-time tally of 25 inside 50s with 22 in the third quarter alone, but could only manage four goals as they edged in front.

Stern defensive efforts from Jeremy McGovern and Tom Barrass, as well as majors to Josh Kennedy and Mark LeCras from just six forward entries at the other end, kept the Eagles in it."

The Age[]

"The Tigers led by a goal at three quarter-time – and there would be only three majors in the final term as rain sheeted across the ground.

The first – and most important – came from Jack Riewoldt, who had, for the most part, a dirty afternoon, turning the ball over eight times and being nominated as the worst player afield by Wayne Carey on Triple M.

But come the pivotal moment, Riewoldt hauled in a quick kick by Brandon Ellis and, with a heavy, slippery ball, converted a set shot from 20 metres out to stretch the lead to two goals. It would be enough."

East Perth report[]

Round 4 (7 April)

East Perth started brightly against Claremont but a scoreless second term handed control of the match to the Tigers, who ultimately ran out comfortable 39-point winners. Dom Sheed responded positively to his omission from the senior side with 37 disposals, and youngster Daniel Venables kicked two goals in his second WAFL appearance. The club's dwindling ruck stocks were put in further jeopardy with Fraser McInnes reported for striking former teammate Anton Hamp.

Appearing for East Perth: Brophy, Gorter, Karpany, Lamb, MacKenzie, McInnes, Mutimer, Partington, Schofield, Sheed, Snadden, Venables, Watson.
