West Coast won the 43rd Derby in a match that was a dour arm-wrestle even before the heavens opened up at halftime. The Eagles trailed for much of tghe first half but were able to get on top despite some wayward kicking, helped by Dockers ruckman Aaron Sandilands being taken to hospital with a punctured lung. In his 200th game, Matt Priddis won the Glendinning Medal with his 31 disposal, 8-tackle game, and Jack Darling had eight marks and three goals.

From the coach[]
"I think we’ve got to respect what Freo were up against as well. Losing their key ruckman and going in with him as their only main ruckman was backs against the wall stuff from them. We probably could have converted a little bit better. In fact, we definitely could have. We’re a supply team; we like to give our forwards plenty of supply. Normally if you get over 60 inside 50s you normally go pretty well. The fact we didn’t finish off was disappointing, but I think in general we grinded it out pretty well.
"...We were really disappointed last week after the Hawthorn game and there was a bit of soul-searching going on from everyone. To respond like that, the fact that it was a bit of a grind was really pleasing and really good for our leaders, to all contribute well and bounce back. It’s important for us because we’re still going some maturity things about where we are at and what kind of team we can be. To win like that tonight, when it got wet, to grind it out we were pretty happy.
"...Every game is different how you go about your preparation and performance. We’re pretty consistent with what we do during the week, but every game presents something a little bit different. We’ve had three really different games. I think for the most part we have carried ourselves pretty well, but last week we were really disappointed, so now we’re looking for the consistency,. We need to back it up."
From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"The Dockers, with Sandilands winning in the ruck, had jumped the Eagles early in the game and led by eight points at quarter time thanks to first quarter goals from small forward Michael Walters, Nathan Fyfe and Pavlich.
But that was to be just about all the scoring they did for two quarters after the loss of Sandilands early in the second term.
By half time the Eagles were nursing a one goal lead and control of the game. Darling had established himself as a target in attack the Dockers were struggling to get control of.
The ruck contests were another area the Dockers were left with little hope in. Fremantle had left out back up ruckman Jon Griffin to use Alex Pearce in support of Sandilands in a bid to get more run around the ground."[1]
The Age[]
"Ross Lyon's team managed just two goals between quarter-time and three-quarter-time, then suddenly sprang back to life in a final-term spurt in which former captain Matthew Pavlich kicked a brilliant banana goal from deep in the left-forward pocket.
Fremantle got back within two straight kicks but the Eagles steadied and effectively iced the contest when Lewis Jetta kicked his first [note: second] goal as a West Coast player 19 minutes into the term.
The off-season recruit owed his new club one after blowing an absolute sitter 30 metres out during a patch early in the final quarter when the Eagles really should have put the game away for good.
The Eagles' eventual margin of victory was padded by late goals to Jack Darling, Luke Shuey and Josh Kennedy and suitably rewarded midfield stalwart and Brownlow medallist Matt Priddis on his 200th game."[2]
Sunday Times[]
"The Dockers held up admirably for a time, with the Eagles eventually breaking Fremantle’s dogged resistance after a second-term arm wrestle that looked like it might produce a goalless quarter.
After 22 minutes without a goal, Eric Mackenzie provided the most unlikely of breakthroughs in time-on when his drop punt from the 50m arc found the opening.
It was just Mackenzie’s seventh goal in 124 games and when he was mobbed by his teammates it was in recognition of not only his return from a knee reconstruction, but the importance of his timing.
Darling kicked his second goal seconds before half-time to enable West Coast to lead by six points at the major break."[3]
