2 A.Sandilands (FRE)
1 S.Hill (FRE)
West Coast were well and truly out of the game very early thanks to a Fremantle onslaught that saw the Dockers kick the first 11 goals of the match. A record margin looked on the cards but the Eagles were able to stem the bleeding before halftime and then made some cosmetic improvements to the scoreboard in the last term. The result was made worse by yet another injury to a key defender, with Jeremy McGovern subbed off with a knee injury. Mark LeCras kicked his 300th career goal in the third term and then added four more in the last.

From the coach[]
"We just got whacked on the chin, staggered and got whacked again. For a group that we're trying to develop at the moment it was really disappointing that we didn't calm ourselves down and we just got annihilated in that first quarter and really the game was over at quarter time. There was a lot of things that we wanted to go into the game with but we just couldn't do because we couldn't win the ball.
...
When you play a top four side that is up and about you need to turn up, and we just didn't turn up.
...
I thought we handled ourselves better as the game went on, and probably just saved some embarrassment to be honest but that doesn't take away what happened in the first quarter. We adjusted some things and tried to plug a few holes, but when you're getting beaten in every aspect of the game in the first quarter you've got to start back in the hunt. Freo were good, very very good. We knew they were going to come in, it's a big game, a really big game. We didn't stand up in that first quarter, and we're really disappointed that it panned out that way."
From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"Fremantle hit the opening bounce like a bull at a gate, dominating the Eagles at the contest and getting the ball going their way with ease.
The two sides sized each other up for a couple of minutes, but when Zac Clarke kicked the first goal of the game it sparked a Dockers deluge the likes of which had never been seen from WA’s ‘little brothers’ in a western derby.
Neale, Hill and Fyfe took control of the midfield battle, helping their side kick a further eight goals unanswered goals to close out the term."[2]
The Age[]
"Fremantle's 30-point win over West Coast at Domain Stadium on Sunday was much more impressive than the final margin suggests.
The Eagles kicked nine of the last 10 goals of the game, including the final five, after they were dominated by the Dockers in the first half. The margin could have and should have been so much bigger.
It blew out to 79 points just seven minutes into the third term, but the intensity very quickly went out of the game after that. Mark LeCras was the biggest benefactor of the Eagles resurgence, kicking five goals in that period that started at the 13-minute mark of the third term."[3]
Herald-Sun[]
"Fremantle won the clearances 15-4 and contested possession 43-27 in a devastating first quarter to set up a 52-point advantage.
Eagles coach Adam Simpson sent new tagger Matt Rosa to Fyfe after his successful shut-down job on Chris Judd, but there was no stopping the reigning AFLPA MVP as he helped drive the Dockers with a game-high four clearances and 10 touches in the opening stanza.
The decision to grant Hill some latitude also backfired as he starred in the first half, and by the time defensive forward Pat McGinnity was switched onto him during the second term Hill had already kicked three goals and the game was gone."[4]
East Perth report[]
Round 5 (18 April)
East Perth were upset by Peel in fine conditions at Leederville Oval, falling by 23 points. Brant Colledge continued racking up big numbers with 38 possessions, 13 marks and 2 goals, and Tom Barrass had a very solid senior debut in the backline.
Appearing for East Perth: Barrass(*first East Perth appearance), Brophy, Colledge, Lamb*, Lucas, McInnes, Sinclair, Waterman. Reserves: Adamson, Hutchings, Main, Powell
