In a classic Derby, West Coast trailed at halftime but fought their way back into the contest in the second half, running over the top of Fremantle to win by just 8 points. Chris Judd won the Glendinning Medal with a best-afield, 31 touch, 10 clearance game and Ashley Hansen's three goals in the second half were vital.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"First game player Jaymie Graham kicked two with his first two kicks in AFL football. Ruckman Dean Cox and Quinten Lynch chipped in for a couple as the Eagles outscored Fremantle nine goals to five after half-time, six unanswered goals coming in a devastating stretch either side of three-quarter time.

Judd was majestic, Fletcher prolific, captain Ben Cousins brave to carry a compund fracture to his left middle finger through the match.he Doc

The other story of this derby was one of persistence. The Eagles were beaten, even outclassed by the Dockers in the second quarter. But they were able to carve a win out of Judd and Fletcher's dominance, and by getting a lift from players who had been thrashed to the main break."[1]

The Sunday Age[]

"Fremantle went to half-time with a 21-point buffer but, if the Dockers thought the Eagles were spent, they were mistaken.

West Coast got the first goal of the term through Andrew Embley, who had been well tagged to that point by Steven Dodd, then Graham bobbed up for a strong mark in the goalsquare.

The Eagles outscored the Dockers four goals to two. One of those Fremantle scores came in freakish circumstances, Aaron Sandilands getting a centre-square free kick and then a 50-metre penalty to kick a goal. But regardless of who had the momentum, it was the Eagles who had the run.

They had closed to within five points at three-quarter time and they kicked the first four goals of the last quarter, Ashley Hansen beating McPharlin for his second and third goals and Lynch and Cox also getting in on the act.

Suddenly the Eagles were 27 points clear and cruising."[2]
