In the second-last AFL game at Victoria Park, West Coast overcame a slow start to consign the home Magpies to their ninth consecutive loss. The locals took advantage of one of their last opportunities to make a nuisance of themselves, hurling beer cans at the umpires and Scott Cummings. Cummings kicked 7 goals and Ben Cousins led the way with 29 possessions.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"The Magpies opened up with two of the first three goals of the second term to go 19 points up, then Cummings stepped in again with two goals to start a West Coast feast.

Cummings was ably backed by former Dandenong Stingray Andrew Williams, who kicked four second-half goals in only his eighth senior game.

Without captain Nathan Buckley and vice-captain Scott Burns the Pies were always going to be vulnerable, but they were kept in the game for the first 45 minutes by youngsters Clinton King, Paul Licuria and James Wasley.

The Eagles midfield was slow to fire-up and then, with Dean Kemp off the field with a calf injury, they appeared to become slightly rattled. However, Ben Cousins, Drew Banfield, Chad Morrison and Phillip Read lifted half-way through the second quarter to such an extent that they became dominant players."[1]
