From the papers[]

The Age[]

"The meanness of the Eagles' defence in the first quarter was best illustrated in the statistics - Fremantle made 19 sorties across the 50-metre zone and led centre clearances 5-0, yet the Eagles led by 26 points.

Heading the Eagles defence was Ashley McIntosh, marking, thumping and bumping, with Glen Jakovich also in fine touch, often on his own as Fremantle indulged in a five-man forward line with Andrew McGovern being used as a spare man in defence.

Peter Matera, so often a match winner, especially in derbies, had a rare off day. "Dreadful", Malthouse later declared.

Matera was frustrated by close attention from Jason Norrish, so much so that he was sent to the bench to cool down just before quarter-time."[1]
