From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Carey was kept to just 10 possessions for the game, as was Longmire, who was shut down by Mitchell White.

Mick Martyn did a reasonable job on Sumich, tagging him from the goal square to any where up to the wings - though this allowed players like Don Pyke to plunder the ball out of the centre area and stream towards goal.

Ashley McIntosh was likewise free to roam. Both booted three goals.

Dean Kemp also helped fill any Matera gap with 21 potent possessions out of midfield."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"Reigning premier West Coast issued a warning to all challengers when it gave North Melbourne a 48-point thrashing in Perth on Saturday night.

North Melbourne's hopes blew out the door midway through the third term when captain Wayne Carey had to leave the field with a head injury. The Kangaroos lost 5.13 (43) to West Coast's 12.19 (91).

Carey came off second best in a head clash and left the ground with blood streaming from his scalp and, although he returned towards the end of the quarter, he was kept decidedly quiet by Glen Jakovich throughout the match."[2]
