West Coast banked their first win of the season courtesy of a virtuoso performance from Josh Kennedy, who kicked six goals in the third term and ten for the match against his former side. The Eagles trailed at the first break but held Carlton scoreless in the second term, then put daylight between them and the Blues in the third quarter thanks to Kennedy's heroics. Mark LeCras added four goals from 17 possessions and Luke Shuey had 24 possessions and eight tackles as well as two goals.

"We succumbed to a bit of pressure last week. The Bulldogs were number 1 for the competition over pre-season and last week as well. We didn't handle that pressure well enough - our rucks, our midfielders. But tonight I thought early on it was a pretty hot game, and for the most part we were pretty consistent and eventually it broke open a little bit in the second half. But they stood up for a bit longer today, they were pretty keen to respond. They were pretty disappointed.

I think everyone knows who plays over here, if you get deep entries it's hard to get out and if you're well organised and you put a bit of pressure on, it takes a bit of work - a bit more work than it would at Etihad or at the MCG with the width. There's no doubt that's part of the advantage of having a game played here. But getting deep entries and keeping it in is what you train for. Every team wants forward half pressure and every team wants time in the forward half. We thought we got it in a bit deeper on occasions and it helped us keep it in there."

"The Blues fell away after a promising start. They kicked three unanswered goals to finish the first term and take a 12-point lead to quarter time. But they had to wait 52 minutes for their next major.

Rosa moved onto Judd and did a great job of restricting his influence.

Judd turned on a master class in the first term with 12 possessions but Rosa shut him out of the match.

Matt Priddis dominated the clearances and Andrew Gaff was tremendous as he ran with the ball, showed courage and applied pressure."

"The game could have been over at half-time, but West Coast's 3.7 and one out on full kept the Blues in the contest. Five of those shots came from free kicks that the Blues gave away inside their own defensive 50 metres.

Carlton's fade-out of the game after quarter-time was concerning.

The fact that no one could stand up after Judd started copping a tag from Rosa is something else that needs to be addressed by the Blues quickly."

"Carlton endured its first scoreless term since the 2013 semi-final, struggling to even enter its forward 50 arc in the final 10 minutes as the Priddis-led Eagles surged.

It was only through a hat-trick of inaccurate set-shot attempts from Gaff, Chris Masten and Shuey that enabled the visitors to briefly stay within range.

But the weight of forward entries eventually took its toll as Kennedy got the better of Michael Jamison and Sam Rowe with a succession of strong contested and leading marks.

Kennedy booted six of West Coast’s seven goals in the third term, including a set shot after the siren that resulted in a swarm of teammates joining the celebration."
