From the coach[]

"I said straight after the game it was still a pretty intense game. Tough conditions being so hot out there and losing Embley early on stretched us a bit, but overall I thought the guys maintained their concentration, their intensity for the four quarters.

"...Regardless of the names in your forward area, if the ball is in there enough you generally get enough scoring shots. We didn't think we were going to replace LeCras and Nicoski with players that weren't up to playing AFL football. We were going to replace them with very good players. Overall it is about playing roles and the team understanding what those roles are and then picking talented players to play those roles.

"...We were a bit disappointed with some aspects of the way we played last week and we put it down to the fact it was round one, but we knew there were areas in which we wanted to challenge ourselves to get better. It is probably a game that is hard to measure because we got that dominance of the ball inside our forward 50, but we have got plenty of challenges that are going to come our way to see where we are really at over the next couple of weeks."[1]

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"It was a garrotting from the time the Eagles turned up the heat in a three-goal, five-minute burst in the second quarter - a burst in which they forced Melbourne defenders to cough the ball up three times and stretched a 16-point lead to 34 points.

The game was over and the slaughter was about to begin.

By half-time the lead was 48 points. By three-quarter-time that lead had almost doubled again - to 90 points.

And when Daniel Kerr shrugged off Jordie McKenzie as if he wasn't there at the two-minute mark of the last quarter, dished a 20-metre handball to a running Andrew Gaff who kicked the Eagles' 21st goal, the lead was more than 100 points."[2]

The Sunday Times[]

"While Melbourne was atrocious in most areas, the positives for West Coast cannot be overlooked, with the home team's lines leaping flawlessly out of the playbook for most of the game.

In the limited times the Demons pushed forward, the Eagles were brilliantly composed in their transition out of defence through Eric Mackenzie, Ash Smith, Will Schofield and 100-gamer Shannon Hurn.

The midfield ball-winners were as prolific as ever, with Scott Selwood's best-on-ground performance the standout among strong showings from the ever-reliable Matt Priddis, Daniel Kerr, Luke Shuey and Matt Rosa.

Then, despite Josh Kennedy and Josh Hill being well minded, the attack fired superbly with 12 goalkickers, six of whom were multiple scorers."[3]
