In a game that ebbed and flowed, West Coast trailed by 27 points during the second term but fought their way back to lead by three-quarter time. Port then kicked four straight goals to start the final quarter (three of them to the unheralded Jason Davenport) and although the Eagles again fought back into the match, they were unable to regain the lead. Nic Naitanui was electrifying with 21 touches and as many hitouts, while Adam Selwood continued his good run of form with 30 touches and 10 tackles.

From the papers[]
Herald-Sun[]
"A quick snap from Tom Swift off heavy ruck work from Naitanui again 10 minutes into the term dragged the margin back to just one point.
But West Coast constantly bombed the ball into its scoring zones and Eagles forwards managed just four marks inside their forward 50m arc.
West Coast entered the final term looking in control, particularly as Port had not scored a goal since 10 minutes into the second quarter, but a clever snap from Davenport dragged the margin back to just one goal.
A howler of a pass from emerging defender Eric Mackenzie across goal to Hurn gave Port a simple goal and scores were level before Davenport slotted another two in six minutes."
