In another shootout, West Coast trailed by 28 points during the final quarter before mounting a comeback, pulling the margin back to three points but missing crucial shots that could have proved the difference. Goalsneaks Phil Matera and Ashley Sampi were terrific up forward, while the impact of star midfielders Ben Cousins and Chris Judd was quelled by Port taggers Kane Cornes and Dom Cassisi.

From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"Dean Cox, Phil Matera and Chris Judd all hit the post from point-blank range as the Eagles came agonisingly close to nailing last year's minor premier in the dying seconds of the game.

After trailling by 28 points midway through the final term, the Eagles kicked the last four goals of the match.

When young Eagle Ashley Sampi booted his fifth goal with a booming shot from outside 50 metres the margin was only three points with 90 seconds left.

But Port, which also missed a number of fairly simply shots in the closing stages, was able to run down the clock to be just in front on the final siren."
