From the papers[]

The Age[]

"While the Swans were able to plug the gap left by Minton-Connell, who went off with a knee injury in the first quarter, the wound inflicted in the West Coast forward line by the absence of the suspended Peter Sumich was more grievous.

Too often the West Coast fleet of runners would deliver the ball to unresponsive and inactive forwards. David Hynes replaced Sumich and kicked three goals but was well-held.

Eagle Brett Heady showed only patches of brilliance. He finished with three fine goals and was unlucky that another three shots hit the goal post. His forward colleague Chris Lewis was often collared by the Swans' fierce tackling and his disposal was uncharacteristically sloppy.

Utility Dean Kemp stood out from the gloom of the disappointing West Coast performance and the grey Sydney sky. He gathered 33 disposals all over the ground."[1]

Canberra Tmes[]

"Giant Swans ruckman Brad Tunbridge, a rock in defence in the second term while playing loose across the backline, domi nated the third term.

He was joined by Swans defenders Darren Kappler, Neil Cordy and Mark Bayes who all combined to launch attacking moves from the half-back line, while closing down the Eagles' small brigade of Chris Mainwaring, Brett Heady and Craig Turley.

Up forward, new recruit David Strooper was growing in confidence and kicked two, while Craig Nettelbeck bagged his third for the game with a brilliant 50m goal on the run.

But all the Swans' good work seemed to be lost midway through the final term after the Eagles posted two goals, one a brilliant solo effort on the run by Peter Matera from deep in on the boundary, to build what looked to be a match-winning cushion.

But the Swans came home with a rush."[2]
