From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"The drive for Sumich and the Eagles was set up by their midfielders and on-ball players. Chris Lewis, Brett Heady, Craig Turley and Chris Mainwaring repeatedly drove the ball forward and, when not in possession, defended with a spirit somewhat uncharacteristic of players from Western Australia.

Lewis, in particular, was a huge inspiration to his teammates. Often criticised for being a one-way footballer, his value to the side has improved dramatically now that he has learnt to tackle and chase. He laid on five yesterday and shut down many Magpie forward thrusts.

In defence, the Eagles blanketed the Collingwood prime movers. Chris Waterman on Peter Daicos, Guy McKenna on Gavin Crosisca and Michael Brennan on Craig Starcevich all worked, and while Leigh Matthews juggled his men all over the place, he could not produce a successful combination where it mattered most - in front of the sticks."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"Collingwood was never allowed to find its rhythm during the match, mainly because of the Eagles' close checking and fierce tackles. Chris Waterman virtually shut out Magpie maestro Peter Daicos with a close marking role in defence.

Reliable defenders John Worsfold and Guy McKenna also put in fine performances in defence to help negate Collingwood's avenues for goal.

Full-forward Peter Sumich, who last year booted the point that tied the qualifying final, wasn't all that accurate in front, but still managed five goals."[2]
