From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"Lockett again outclassed all comers. He has now kicked 21 goals in his last two matches against West Coast at Moorabbin. At times he had to contend with three or four opponents, but clever positioning of his huge frame allowed his powerful marking ability to come into play. He finished with nine goals.

Lockett was well supported by Rod Owen on the half-forward flank, and Ricky Nixon at centre half-forward. Owen in particular made use of the extra latitude given to him courtesy of a West Coast backline besotted with stopping Lockett, and chipped in with four handy goals.

However, the most encouraging aspect of the Saints' forward play was their fierce desire to tackle and lock the ball in their half of the ground. Time and again players like Winmar, krakouer, Russo and Harvey, usually more renowned for their skill, hurled themselves fearlessly at oppponents, ensuring that the football did not escape from their forward line with ease."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"The Eagles could not find a target in attack and constantly placed each other under pressure with poor delivery of the ball.

Malthouse said he was tired of the excuse that the team could not perform away from home. "It's no excuse whether its at Subiaco or anywhere else," he said.

The Eagles had only a handful of honest triers, and it was disappointing that the brunt of the workload fell back on to youngsters including Troy Ugle and Dean Kemp."[2]
