West Coast demolished the Bombers to record the biggest win in the club's short history. Essendon were in touch at halftime but managed just three goals thereafter, while the Eagles pumped in 15, including a nine-goal-to-nil final term to go within a whisker of a triple-figure victory. Dean Turner kicked three goals from 26 possessions and Dwayne Lamb also had three from 24 touches.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Essendon's capitulation was alarming, given the positive way it attacked the ball in the opening stages. Simon Madden started in brilliant fashion, and provided runners Darren Williams and Glen Hawkers (sic) with an abundance of opportunities early.

But Alex Ishchenko, who started across the half-back line, moved into the middle and, as usual, exerted a massive influence on the game. He brought a host of smaller Eagles players into the action, and West Coast did not look back.

West Coast's fleet of running players were soon peppering the forward line, where Glendinning was too classy, both in the air and on the turf, for recruits Andrew Rogers and Andrew Merryweather. Glendinning received great assistance from Andrew Lockyer, who booted three goals late in the piece, and the blond Karl Langdon, a consistent performer across the half-forward line."[1]
