From the papers[]

The Age[]

"The match was a magnificent spectacle, a great credit to both sides and the stuff needed to bring crowds to the game.

At the risk of disturbing the Bombers, the Eagles provided the more attractive style of play. It is not necessarily winning football, as was proved this time, but the Eagles' delivery of the ball and their selective use of handball were delightful. They seem to have learned the skills more thoroughly in WA.

However, once more is known of them, their good players will be tagged - nullifying their ability to make the game as open and entertaining.

Essendon does not lack skill, far from it. However, it did not execute the moments.

Canberra Times[]

"At halftime, Essendon had reversed its deficit but led by only seven points.

Then, in the see-sawing nature of the game, the Eagles' forward line re-asserted itself with rover John Gastev booting three for the quarter and helping his team to a four-point lead.

Right up until the last quarter, the game was anybodys but just when it counted, the Essendon big men began to take over.

Merrett, along with full-forward Paul Salmon, dominated in the air and the Eagles had to wait for the ball to hit the ground to have any chance of making a forward thrust."[1]
