West Coast took out the minor premiership with a big victory over the Bulldogs in a spiteful encounter. The game boiled over on the half-time siren when Brett Heady was floored by a shirtfront, sparking an ugly all-in brawl. When the players cleared Peter Sumich was unconscious, having been the victim of a Danny Southern sleeper-hold, and had to be stretchered from the field. The loss of Sumich and Heady did little to halt the Eagles momentum as they kicked eight goals to two in the second half to record a 71-point win. Don Pyke kicked three goals from 24 touches in his 100th appearance, and David Hynes had 24 hitouts and a goal to go with 23 possessions.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Until injuries took their toll, it was West Coast's new tall forward structure of Sumich, Spinks and best-afield Jason Ball that won the day and turned round a shocking 64-point thrashing at the hands of Carlton a fortnight earlier in Melbourne.

The trio, backed up by the superb return from obscurity of David Hynes, consistently outmarked their Bulldog counterparts in what was heading for a dress rehearsal for the finals until Spinks was helped from the ground late in the second quarter. Minutes later, Sumich was another casualty and joined Heady, who had just replaced Spinks, in the medical room.

To have had Heady off the field for so long speaks volumes for the lethal Eagle attack, which got the home side off to a flying start and led by 37 points at half-time.

And the scraps the Eagles big men left behind were polished off in style by the new-look Chris Lewis, sporting a fresh crew-cut."[1]
