From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Justin Madden performed well around the ground, though Paul Harding was his equal. But it was on the ball that Carlton was beaten. Eagles rover Tony Evans was in superb touch early, and finished with 28 possessions. Carlton drew him off the ball in the second half and into a pocket alongside Adrian Gleeson, which curbed his output to a degree.

Stephen Kernahan struggled to shake clear of Glen Jakovich, which Steven Silvagni struggled to close down Sumich, before Parkin finally relented and sent him up forward.

For West Coast, Chris Mainwaring, with 35 possessions, starred on a wing, and Brett Heady, after an injury-plagued year, began to show signs of his best.

Carlton's only serious challenge came in the third quarter, when it outscored the Eagles 5.4 to 2.3. But the premiership quarter, which has so often lifted Carlton sides of the past to great heights, had little impact on the Eagles' lead yesterday."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"The Eagles had a lot less at stake than Carlton yesterday, although they could have dropped to fifth with a loss, but they were more desperate early in the match.

They racked up a 40-point lead by quarter-time and were about 52 points clear early in the third quarter.

No doubt, realising their plight, the Blues slipped into gear and cut the gap to 25 by three-quarter time but could get no closer.

But West Coast's celebration at qualifying for a home AFL final was tainted by the reporting of forward Karl Langdon for unduly interfering with boundary umpire Andrew Neale by pushing him in the chest during the second quarter."[2]
