From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"Without doubt, it was Rendell who provided the inspiration for his team's third-quarter revival. While he won more than his share of tap-outs, it was his general play that lifted those around him.

Rendell's clever handpass to Harding created the latter's goal five minutes into the third quarter. His gutsy smother at the next centre bounce resulted in a goal on the run for Stephens. Two minutes later, his shepherd allowed Darren Kappler to pass to Harding for another goal to level the scores. The floodgates were wide open and the Lions steamrolled the Eagles - piling on 6.5 to three points for the quarter.

The Eagles regrouped at three-quarter-time and looked likely to give the Fitzroy fairytale a sad ending when a bad error in defence by Alastair Lynch resulted in a goal to draft choice Robert West, the former Victorian who replaced Chris Lewis in the Eagles' starting lineup. It would not have been unexpected if the Lions had taken that as their cue to wilt and surrender to their highly rated opponents.

But instead Fitzroy increased the pressure and it was the Eagles who fumbled and missed handball targets."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"The Eagles have lost only two games all year but the Lions, who claimed off the bottom of the ladder with their 10-point victory, ran all over them in the second half.

Fitzroy had kicked only one goal to the half-time break but six goals with the wind in the third quarter and another seven in the last carried them home to a 14.15 (99) to 12.17 (89) victory."[2]
