West Coast were competitive against the Giants but were pushed to the brink of elimination from finals contention with a 21-point loss. In an intense contest, GWS skipped out to a sizeable lead in the second term but the Eagles were able to pull the margin back within single figures by halftime, where it remained for much of the second half before a couple of late goals boosted the scoreboard for the home side. Elliot Yeo had a big game with 30 possessions opposed to the dangerous Toby Greene, while the retiring Matt Priddis kicked two goals to go with 31 touches.

Quarter by quarter[]

Both sides went in as named. The match was played in fine conditions.

First term[]

West Coast moved the ball quickly forward after Duggan won a crucial battle and hit Kennedy, who scored the opening goal, the 500th of his Eagles' career. Josh Kelly popped a kick up to the top of the goalsquare where Brett Deledio marked and goaled to level the scores. Shuey left the ground with a bloody nose after a high tackle went unpenalised. The Giants locked the ball in their forward half for a lengthy period but the Eagles' defence was able to hold up. Cripps took a mark inside forward 50 but his kick went well wide and failed to score. Partington crumbed the next forward 50 entry and snapped but just missed. Gaff turned the ball over in midfield but Jacob Hopper luckily missed a shot on goal.

Jon Patton marked on a lead and kicked truly to give the Giants the lead. Petrie took a big pack mark down the other end and leveled the scores. Hill chopped off a pass at half-back and the ball ended up with Cripps who converted. Both sides had their chances late in the term but neither was able to add to their score, with the Eagles leading by a solitary goal at the first break.

Second term[]

Cripps marked inside 50 and hit the post with his set shot as Patton left the ground following a head clash with a teammate. GWS got a fast break and Deledio was able to stroll in and goal to narrow the margin to a point. They took the lead through Toby Greene who took a strong mark opposed to Yeo. Shuey kicked into the back of Duggan then gave away a free kick just outside 50, which ended in a missed shot at goal by Stephen Coniglio. The ball quickly came back in but Greene missed a running shot. Patton missed one shortly afterwards as GWS controlled territory.

Greene received a free kick inside 50 and converted. Lachie Whitfield added another courtesy of a shepherd on the goal-line after a turnover by Priddis, as the Giants threatened to break the game over. Petrie marked inside 50 but his shot fell short and was marked by Cameron. Duggan stole a handpass in the centre square and Partington found Kennedy who kicked around the corner for his second. They added another through Partington shortly afterwards after another strong effort by Duggan. A very short pass by Mitchell to Priddis resulted in a third straight goal and a two-point lead. Shuey gave away a 50-metre penalty and Nathan Wilson goaled with a long bomb. Kennedy nearly dragged in a mark and threw the boot at the ball but missed the goals. Vardy took a massive mark at half-forward but too far out to score as time expired, with the home side ahead by 7 points.

Third term[]

Sheed opened the scoring with a behind from a snap, followed by Cameron missing a set shot at the other end. Both sides struggled to find avenues to goal, with the Eagles' defenders chopping off GWS' forward entries but failing to find a path inside 50. Eventually the deadlock was broken when Priddis snapped out of a stoppage and the ball bounced through for his second goal. Hurn got taken high and left the ground with blood flowing from his forehead, with Hopper similarly afflicted after the pair clashed heads. Partington snapped out of congestion but the ball went out on the full.

Priddis almost got a third after another snap from a stoppage but the off-break bounce didn't quite go far enough, tying the scores. After another lengthy stalemate, Barrass won a free kick for holding the ball and Kennedy took a big contested mark, kicking his third goal and giving his side the lead. A brilliant chase-down by Jetta forced a turnover but a free kick was paid against Kennedy in front of goal. GWS sent the ball forward but the defence was able to rush a behind. The Giants won the ball back on the wing and Shiel converted to give his side a narrow lead. Jetta got the ball behind a pack but failed to squirt it through from the pocket, missing everything. That ended the third term with the Giants ahead by a single point.

Final term[]

GWS had the first opportunity of the term when Scully marked inside 50, and he goaled to put his side up by seven. Priddis got a free kick inside 50 and gave off to Hurn who hit a leading Jetta, but his set shot hit the post. Patton outmarked Barrass on 50 metres but his set shot was badly away to the left and spoiled out of bounds. Devon Smith received a free kick against Shuey on the boundary but his shot was similarly run over the line in the opposite pocket. A dribbled shot by Greene from the pocket just slid across and through for a point.

Sheppard drilled a pass to Kennedy who hung onto a mark as Kelly ran underneath him, resulting in a huge collision. Despite being shaken up, Kennedy converted to bring the Eagles within a point. Greene answered quickly at the other end as Yeo slipped at an inopportune time. Patton marked on the lead but his kick was just narrow. West Coast went forward but Cripps fumbled and got caught holding the ball. Smith marked inside 50 but his kick went left. Kelly found Mumford who goaled to ice the game. Kelly ran into an open goal to increase the margin. He had another chance in the dying moments but kicked it out on the full. The siren sounded with the Giants 21 points ahead.

From the coach[]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Kennedy kicked his first goal – his 500th in West Coast colours – within two minutes of the first bounce when he marked in front of Aidan Corr on the lead and converted from outside 50m.

Greene was jeered by Eagles fans and had plenty of the ball early, but a horror pass on the wing was intercepted by Hill and punished when Cripps finished a swift forward thrust.

The Eagles led by that goal at the first change.

It was all GWS early in the second term as Shaw and Wilson helped create a string of scoring opportunities off half-back."

The Age[]

"Jamie Cripps and then Drew Petrie goaled to give the Eagles a quarter-time lead before the Giants slowly but surely started to take control of the arm wrestle.

Deledio ran into an open goal to nail a second, delivering exactly on the expectation the club had of his offensive potential when he was traded in over the summer.

Greene managed two majors in the second term as he narrowly started to edge Yeo in their running battle while Lachie Whitfield and Nathan Wilson also kicked long-range goals to propel GWS further in front.

But West Coast refused to lie down, and their three-goal burst late in the term set things up for the second half."

Daily Telegraph[]

"Toby Greene made the most of his reprieve at the MRP kicking three important goals and picking up 17 possessions including 10 contested and taking five marks.

Lachie Whitfield was also outstanding for GWS with 31 disposals as was Callan Ward who helped the home side take the edge in contested possession (144-136).

Nathan Wilson was outstanding in defence as he drove continuous attacks and landed a massive second quarter goal from the edge of the centre square.

Matt Priddis (31 possessions) and Elliot Yeo (30) gave the Eagles plenty of drive and Kennedy his fair share of opportunities but the loss has put a serious dent in their finals chances. They face ladder leaders Adelaide at Domain Stadium on Sunday."
