West Coast smothered reigning premiers Hawthorn to record a crucial win but the victory was soured by an apparent serious knee injury to star ruckman Nic Naitanui. The Eagles dominated from the opening and broke away to a 41-point lead by the final change, but with Naitanui on the bench icing his knee for the final term, Hawthorn were able to reduce the margin to just 25 by the close of play. Andrew Gaff tallied 38 disposals and Jeremy McGovern took nine marks in defence.

From the coach[]
"Yeah, it’s a little bit indifferent, the mood. We are really proud of our players and our performance as a collective. We’ve been written off for a fair bit of the year and I thought tonight we stood pretty tall against a quality opposition. And then your mind flicks to Nic’s situation and thinking about the worst, which we shouldn’t do. It’s a bit of a bittersweet situation at the moment.
"...We were pleased with the four quarters. We knew that Hawthorn were going to come. The contested ball for us, and I know that sometimes it’s not a massive indicator, but we got beaten up the last two times we played Hawthorn in the contest. Despite where it was or how it was done, it was a pretty big focus of ours to get that competitive and I thought we managed that pretty well. And on top of that there were a few individuals that stood up for us. I know that last quarter didn’t look pretty, but we knew it was coming.
"...They are probably not as tall a team as we are going to confront even next week when we play Adelaide. They have got so many weapons at ground level, sometimes you forget about the height that you might be able to get. Obviously they are missing some players. I thought last week we got beaten in the air against the Giants, so to respond like that, I won’t say it was a focus, but that’s how the game played out."[2]
From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"The Eagles wasted early chances and could have led by more than 20 points at quarter time. They dominated the early parts of the second term too but it took until time-on for them to break clear to a 32-point advantage. That proved too much for the Hawks.
The West Coast midfield all performed well.
Priddis, Andrew Gaff and Chris Masten covered heaps of ground and won 97 disposals. Mark Hutchings tagged Sam Mitchell and closed him down.
Mitchell had only nine possessions in the first half and finished with 22."[3]
The Age[]
"West Coast took the game to the Hawks early on Friday night.
They led by 30 points at half-time, after Hawk James Sicily, a late replacement for an ill Will Langford, kicked a goal right on the siren to end the second term.
The Eagles extra pressure saw the reigning champ's usually reliable and pin-point disposal accuracy go missing.
For a while, it looked as though the Eagles were going to blow their early opportunities though. Not many sides can get away from kicking 1.3 from six early shots at goal."[4]
Herald-Sun[]
"Kennedy enhanced his chances of snaring a second successive Coleman Medal by ruling the air up forward, making James Frawley and Josh Gibson look second-rate.
The spearhead had three goals by quarter-time.
Too often Kennedy was afforded the space to contest for the ball one-out, with his belief growing with every mark he clunked.
The home side’s early dominance was built on a greater desire for the ball in slippery conditions.
West Coast doubled the Hawks for contested possessions in the first term as Priddis, Luke Shuey and Naitanui owning the stoppages."[5]
East Perth report[]
Round 22 (20 August)
