West Coast were stunned by an early Adelaide onslaught, and despite a mini-fightback in the second term, failed to make up ground on the Crows to slump to their biggest loss of the 2015 season. On a day where the Eagles had few winners, youngster Dom Sheed fought hard to tally 27 possessions and Brad Sheppard continued to fight out of his weight division in defence.

From the coach[]

"We got blown away, didn't we? It was disappointing. I thought the boys were ready, but obviously they weren't. Full credit's got to go to Adelaide the way they prepared and played and the attitude they came with. But when the discrepancies are like that, I think there's a bit of responsibility our way. We just couldn't get the ball in the first 10 minutes and when we did, we coughed it up and exposed our back line.

"I suppose, looking at the positives, in the second quarter we did respond. But when you start a game like that, you're on the back foot and you're trying to strategise and do things that you wouldn't normally do. You're trying to find ways to get back in the game. The first quarter was really disappointing. The players are fully aware of what's required and if you don't turn up like that, you get what you deserve.

"...The season is still very much alive for us. This was a bad game, we're disappointed, we'll review it and we'll give them a clip, but we're going for top two next week. That might've been the reason that we didn't compete as hard as we normally do. It's a really good reminder and this competition has a way of giving you a clip when you take your eye off the ball."[2]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Adelaide, playing with the carrot of a home elimination final dangling in front of them, burst out of the blocks, kicking six goals from their first 10 forward-50 entries to build a big early advantage.

They kicked the first nine goals of the match and led by 56 points early in the second quarter as the Eagles continually turned the ball over across half-back.

McGovern and Tom Barrass had been brought in to counter the Crows’ array of tall forwards, but all the home side’s major goal kickers were on the board early.

Josh Jenkins dominated his early battle with Barrass, kicking three first-quarter goals, while Walker and Tom Lynch also had an impact."[3]

The Age[]

"West Coast got within 24 points in the second term with a lift in midfield, but the Crows' defence, led by Talia, Brodie Smith and Rory Laird, stood up remarkably well. The much-talked about Eagles power forwards had a really tough day.

Adelaide look so dangerous when Josh Jenkins is in the goal-kicking mood like he was on Sunday. He marked powerfully, and perhaps more than Taylor Walker is the key to their scoring power.

Jenkins kicked goals when the Eagles threatened to steal this game, and he finished with a career-best six goals.

Another significant key to this win were the performances by newcomers Rory Atkins and Riley Knight. Their enthusiasm was infectious; their decision-making process belied their handful of games experience.

West Coast had won their previous three games here but were for most part denied the ability to start their forward thrust from defence. The Crows' forwards held the ball in their 50-metre zone so well, pressuring the Eagles into mistakes and causing turnovers."[4]

Adelaide Advertiser[]

"By quarter-time, with Walker and Eddie Betts joining the goal-fest, Adelaide had eight majors and the lead was out to 50 points.

The Crows had shell-shocked the Eagles by running them ragged, winning 116 disposals to 70 and dominating inside 50s 20-6.

While Adelaide was winning its share of clearances, its dominance came from its strong desire to play on at all costs and outside run.

Scott Camporeale’s re-charged outfit led the uncontested possession count 71-32, illustrating where the game was being won and why it was able to break through the Eagles’ renowned “web’’ defence with ease."[5]

East Perth report[]
