With a spot in the eight potentially up for grabs, West Coast needed a percentage boosting win against the lowly Dees and looked well on the way to that at quarter-time. Melbourne were able to somewhat stem the flow thereafter, actually winning the final term as the Eagles eased their foot off the pedal. Chris Masten ran all day for 32 possessions and Mark LeCras kicked four goals from 23 touches as the Subiaco crowd farewelled Dean Cox.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

Nick Rynne

"West Coast’s finals hopes are still very much alive after a 66-point mauling of Melbourne in Dean Cox’s final game at Patersons Stadium tonight.

The Eagles were ruthless from the opening bounce, running harder, using the ball better and capitalising on every Demons mistake to run out 18.11 (119) to 8.5 (53) winners in front of 35,083 fans.

The game went largely as expected in the first quarter, with the only real surprise being Cox starting on the bench rather than in the ruck.

The retiring Eagles hero ran onto the field to rapturous applause after two minutes, with his side already six point ahead thanks to a classy set shot conversion from LeCras.

Jack Darling averages three goals against the Demons and had already reached that tally by the end of the first quarter in what was looming as a big night for the young forward.

He was joined on the score sheet by Jamie Cripps and Josh Kennedy as the Eagles established a 30-point lead by the first break.

West Coast’s forwards were lining up in front of goals in the third quarter as the margin grew from a strong lead to an absolute blowout.

With Masten, Gaff and Luke Shuey finding space wherever they looked and the Demons continuing to turn the ball over, it was virtually party time for the home side."

The Age[]

Brad Elborough

"Melbourne did have a crack against West Coast, responding after a difficult week, and led the Eagles to the ball in the first half.

At the main break the Demons had had 18 more possessions and 24 more contested possessions, but trailed by 38 points.

It was mainly the second term, after falling behind by 30 points in the first, that the Demons got themselves into the game, in every stat except the scoreboard.

After kicking three goals in seven minutes to start the second term, the Eagles didn't manage another one for the quarter.

The problem for Melbourne is it kicked only two, both from the boot of big man Jack Fitzpatrick.

The Demons, with Max Gawn, Chris Dawes and Fitzpatrick in attack, failed to take a mark inside 50 in the first half. The Eagles took five in the opening quarter and booted three goals from them."

The Herald Sun[]

Braden Quartermaine/PerthNow

"West Coast’s complicated finals equation called for nothing short of a clinical execution of Melbourne, and the hapless Demons provided the perfect fodder at Patersons Stadium.

There was no room for taking the foot off the pedal and there was little more the Eagles could have done as they waltzed to a 66-point win, 18.11 (119) to 8.5 (53).

Some late sloppiness that allowed Melbourne to win the last quarter might still come back to haunt them next Sunday, when every goal will be worth its weight in gold, but for now the Eagles will be grateful they are still alive and part of the finals conversation.

West Coast’s three most dangerous forwards - Josh Kennedy, Jack Darling and Mark LeCras - shared the spoils around as the trio finished with 11 goals between them.

Matt Priddis was held to a quiet game by his lofty standards by tight-checking veteran Daniel Cross, but Chris Masten, Luke Shuey and Andrew Gaff picked up the slack to ensure the forward line received plenty of supply as the Eagles won the inside 50 count 53-31."

AFL.com.au[]

Justin Chadwick/AAP

"Eagles forwards Josh Kennedy and Mark LeCras feasted on Melbourne's struggling defence with four goals apiece, while Jack Darling booted three in the opening quarter to kick-start the rout.

It took until three minutes into the final quarter for Melbourne to take its first mark inside the forward 50m arc.

By then, the contest was over. The Demons have lost their past 15 matches in Perth by an average of 48 points, with their last win at Patersons Stadium in 2004.

Even the pre-match withdrawal of star ruckman Nic Naitanui didn't faze the Eagles, who piled on the goals with ease to celebrate the final home appearance of retiring veteran Dean Cox."
