With a top-two spot sewn up Geelong merely went through the motions against the bottom-placed Eagles. West Coast were in the match at halftime but a Gary Ablett-led burst in the third quarter put the result beyond doubt. Callum Wilson kicked three goals and Ashton Hams had his best game for the club with two goals from 22 possessions.

From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"West Coast's midfield, badly weakened by the absence of Daniel Kerr, Matt Priddis and Adam Selwood, was being led by unheralded youngsters Ashton Hams and Luke Shuey. The seven contested first-half possessions to Hams, who is only 175 centimetres, exceeded that of every other player out there.

The Eagles, at that stage, were in front because of their ability to regularly find players in space in their attacking half. This was reflected in them holding a nine-to-two lead for second-quarter inside 50s midway through it. It did not, however, translate into free scoring, with the Eagles getting no further than eight points in front.

The first hint the match could be rescued from mediocrity came from Gary Ablett. The champion, tagged by Scott Selwood, younger brother of Ablett's absent midfield partner Joel, wrenched the ball from a pack just inside the Cats' attacking 50, sprinted away and snapped a goal to cut the margin to two points."
