Adelaide stole the minor premiership from West Coast, building a solid lead by halftime and then holding off the Eagles grimly in the second half to win their 10th straight and hand the home side their first loss at Subiaco in 21 games. The returning David Wirrpanda had 32 possessions across the backline to lead West Coast, who had sat atop the ladder for 18 straight rounds and had a four-game buffer at stages before losing four of their last six games to stumble into September.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"The Crows flood back and surge forward in well-drilled manoeuvres, counting on hard-nosed midfielders and tough nut defenders to win the ball and start the counterattack.

It made for a not-so-easy, very squeezy West Coast forward line that looked like London during the war as long bombs rained in.

Apart from Chad Fletcher's long-range shots which produced behinds late in the game, five times the Eagles hoofed it long to the point of a crowded square in the last term.

And, with Hansen and Gardiner unable to produce pack marks, it played into Adelaide's willing hands."[1]

The Sunday Age[]

"Eagles skipper Ben Cousins tried hard to rally his team but full-forward Quinten Lynch and half-forward Mark Nicoski were the Eagles' only multiple goalkickers on a day when forward-pocket specialist Phil Matera was well blanketed by Graham Johncock.

West Coast went from a dominant team in the first 10 minutes, to one in an arm wrestle for the last 20 minutes of the first quarter, to a confused lot for the entire second quarter as Adelaide chased down an early 14-point Eagles lead to take their own 20-point advantage to half-time.

West Coast's Subiaco Oval strengths that had helped it to 20 straight victories at the ground, were gradually eroded. The Crows were clearly better at winning the hard ball and without an edge in these areas, the Eagles were unable to get their running game going.

They had kicked the first two goals of the game, the first from a lucky free kick to Brent Staker and the second to Lynch, who shimmied past two Crows defenders into space at half-forward and kicked straight from 40 metres.

But that was where the party ended. Adelaide kicked its first four goals from free kicks as it caught the Eagle defence out of position in one-on-one battles."[2]
