The two Perth-based sides faced off in the final round with plenty at stake, and the contest produced a record Derby crowd and a fierce struggle. Fremantle took the ascendancy in the third quarter but the Eagles fought back in the final term, having the bulk of play but failing to take advantage on the scoreboard as they fell to their fourth Derby loss. West Coast could have earned a finals double chance with a win, but instead were sentenced to a trip to Adelaide for a sudden-death game, while Fremantle gained the right to host their maiden finals appearance. Daniel Kerr was electric for the Eagles, amassing 21 possessions and two goals, including the goal of the year late in the match.
