Geelong's loss the previous Friday meant that West Coast went to Canberra needing to upset the "home" side to squeeze into the finals. The match was an exciting, see-sawing affair with the Roos drawing level in the final term before a Troy Wilson purple patch saw the Eagles take what proved to be a match-winning lead, with North unable to bridge the gap as time expired. Phil Matera finished with 6 goals and Wilson 5, while Ben Cousins dominated the midfield with 33 possessions.

From the papers[]
The Age[]
"Fourteen minutes in [the last term], Wilson escaped the clutches of Mick Martyn and goaled from 50 metres to regain the lead for the Eagles
A minute later he was dragged down by Martyn in the goal square and the ball wound up with Callum Chambers, who played on from the free kick and pushed the margin out one more goal.
At 20 minutes, Wilson hauled in the mark of the day and scored again, for a three-goal lead.
After six minutes of relative sanity, the intense excitement returned - Phil Matera goaled, Digby Morrell replied, Matera scored again, and so on.
But the margin was too big to peg back and time ran out for the Kangaroos."[1]
