West Coast edged closer to a top-two finish with a relatively comfortable win over Fitzroy. The Eagles extended their lead at every break but inaccuracy in front of goal meant the final margin could have been greater. Chris Mainwaring led all comers with 30 possessions and Tony Evans had the best game of his short career with 23 disposals and two goals.

From the papers[]
The Age[]
"The Roys tested the Eagles physically, much the same as Richmond did last Sunday.
Roos, with a free rein up the middle of the ground, and winger Jason Baldwin led Fitzroy's early resistance.
Roos beat his surprise marker, Craig Turley, in the first half, while Baldwin had the honour of forcing Malthouse to take all-Australian winger Matera from the ground.
The Lions' aggression, both at the ball and the Eagles' prime-movers, infuriated some members of the home side, keeping runner and former champion rover Robert Wiley busy in desperate attempts to keep his players from retaliation that could lead to reports."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"The Eagles, who had won nine of the past 11 matches, again had difficulty matching the struggling Lions, who had won the past two encounters between the two clubs.
Led by captain Paul Roos, who collected 30 possessions and outlasted five Eagles' opponents, Fitzroy climbed to within four points of West Coast mid-way through the third term.
However, rover Tony Evans and Karl Langdon helped the Eagles respond to the Lions' assault and guaranteed them a place in the finals."[2]
