From the papers[]
The Sunday Age[]
"Geelong's ascendancy early in the game was evident on the scoreboard where it effectively had doubled the Eagles' number of scoring shots, and in Barry Stoneham's performance in the ruck where he continually fed the ball out to smaller teammates.
With the Cats leading by 18 points at half-time. and with a winning ruck combination together with Ablett on top in the forward area, it looked ominous for the Eagles.
It wasn't until Laurie Keene moved into the ruck halfway through the third quarter and nullified Stoneham's influence that the Eagles' runners came into the game. Two late goals to Sumich and Waterman left them within striking distance of the points."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"Keene's dominance began to tell in the last term and Chris Lewis and Chris Mainwaring stormed from the centre with the ball to set Geelong on the back foot.
With two goals in the space of a minute from Brett Heady, the Eagles sensed Geelong teetering and attacked incessantly. A goal from Waterman followed before Ablett could answer for the Cats.
But with two more goals from Karl Langdon, the last at the 26-minute mark to put the Eagles seven points up, the match and the invaluable third position on the ladder was won. Eagles' coach Michael Malthouse said afterwards he was extremely proud his side didn't fold when the Cats looked like blowing the game open but warned with the finals to come the real hard work was about to begin."[2]
