West Coast's poor season ended with a whimper as they fell to the finals-bound Magpies by 49 points. The Eagles were some chance of causing an upset when they hit the front in the third term but that only prompted Collingwood to switch into gear and put them away. Chris Mainwaring had 33 possessions and Stevan Jackson kicked three goals.

From the papers[]
Sunday Age[]
"The Magpies had no system, they had no runners, they were falling down badly at centre half-forward, and they were allowing a few dominant Eagles to dictate terms.
Chris Mainwaring was a driving force in the centre; Peter Sumich was creating havoc up forward; and Steve Malaxos was gathering kicks at will around the ground.
Collingwood needed to make some changes and it needed to change its mood. To Matthews' credit, he made the right changes. To the players' credit, they lifted their performance and their workrate. From the six-minute mark of the third quarter, they kicked 10 goals for the quarter and put to rest any Eagles' hopes of a boilover.
The moves paid huge dividends. Captain Tony Shaw made Mainwaring work harder for his kicks, Denis Banks came off the bench and put the pressure on Sumich that Ron McKeown had been unable to apply, and Shane Kerrison tagged Steve Malaxos to perfection. The Eagles supply line was effectively closed."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"When the Magpies got behind for the first time in the match they didn't hit the panic button. Instead, coach Leigh Matthews made several positional moves and sparked the revival of his side.
He moved Darren Millane into the forward pocket, then, shifted skipper Tony Shaw onto Mainwaring and then put Morwood onto a wing.
The moves brought instant success as the Magpies repeatedly won the ball from the centre and the goals flowed with ridiculous ease.
The Eagles did not score another goal for the quarter as the Magpies built up a 54 point lead."[2]
