"Roughly speaking, Footscray had to win by 10 goals to earn a place in the finals and by five goals to clear the path for Essendon. At times yesterday, given the speculation that surrounds Footscray's future, the emotion at the Western Oval was as wild as a storm. The Bulldogs took the field by running through an avenue of banners, the last of which claimed "We Shall Not Be Moved", and in the crowd a man howled "Are you hungry, Doggies?"
In the event, it was not their appetite that failed the Bulldogs but their bite. The first quarter was as intense as the match's build-up. Bodies were flung about like rag dolls and it took brave men like Michael Ford and Steve Wallis to make the decisive plays, slicing through packs and collecting the ball from the feet of thundering herds of players. In retrospect, it was probably the match's crucial period; confronted with the fiercest assault Footscray could mount, West Coast held firm."[1]

"Eagles skipper Ross Glendinning kicked one of his side's two goals for the first quarter after which the Eagles held a 2.2 to 1.2 advantage.
Chris Mainwaring and Guy McKenna frustrated the Bulldogs across the half-back line and Murray Rance shut out Footscray centre half-forward Peter Foster.
The Bulldogs relied on Tony McGuinness and Terry Wallace for a wealth of possessions but were found wanting without a reliable forward.
McGuinness kicked two of his side's only three goals for the day and full-forward Simon Beasley was held to one first-term goal."[2]
