West Coast's maiden season finished on a high note when they destroyed the Saints by a club-record 88 points at Subiaco. Chris Lewis kicked five first-quarter goals and finished with seven, equalling the mark set by Don Holmes two weeks previously, while Steve Malaxos set his own club record with 48 disposals.

From the papers[]
The Age[]
"The Eagles clinched the game in the first quarter with a nine-goal burst, restricting St Kilda to one point until the 24-minute mark.
That goal avalanche came from exciting 18-year-old Chris Lewis, who kicked five from full-forward with the Eagles giving him the whole forward line.
David Grant was the man stationed on Lewis - and they were the only two players inside the 50 metre line - but he was quickly replaced by the aggressive Danny Frawley, who successfully cut out the goal orgy.
St Kilda's main scoring hope was ful-forward Tony Lockett, but he was well held by Eagles skipper Ross Glendinning."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"The Eagles ran riot to score the biggest win of their debut season, 26.19(175)to 13.9(87).
The margin, if anything, flattered the hapless Saints who were found lacking on the wide open spaces of Subiaco.
The Eagles were too fast, too skilled and too determined to end their season on the right note after bowing out of the finals race in Melbourne last week."[2]
