West Coast scored an important but unconvincing win over lowly Carlton in blustery conditions, holding off a determined Blues side that charged back from 31 points down at the main break to level the scores at three-quarter time. Josh Kennedy regained the Coleman Medal lead with another bag of six goals, and Jack Redden kicked two goals from 21 possessions.

From the coach[]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Headline act Kennedy went without a touch in the first quarter before putting his stamp on the game in the second.

Having missed a straightforward set shot, the spearhead followed it up with a brilliant long bomb from barely inside the first row of seats to get his first. Kennedy followed up his work, getting his second and then third in quick time.

He got his fourth in the final minute of the third term, but only after the Blues had taken advantage of the breeze to pile on six consecutive majors and give the Eagles a huge fright.

Levi Casboult’s two goals at the Subiaco end gave Carlton reason to hope during the final quarter, but the Eagles wouldn’t be denied as they added five of their own to seal the deal."[1]

The Age[]

"The wind was tough to negotiate in Perth. It was strong and pushed consistently one way. A Jeremy McGovern shot from well inside the centre square in the final term missed the mark, but easily cleared the fence.

The Blues failed to kick a goal against the gale during the second quarter. They managed three into it in a tight final term, including two terrific goals from the boot of Levi Casboult, but it was a classic case of too little, too late.

West Coast's opening term, when they booted four goals without the breeze, set up their night and the win. They led by three points at the opening change.

They backed it up with five to nil in the second term to lead by 31 points at the main break."[2]

Herald-Sun[]

"The Blues dominated the inside-50m count 32-17 in the opening half, but failed to convert their opportunities.

The game turned on its head in the third quarter.

Jack Silvagni missed a sitter from 20m out, but made up for it with two goals for the term.

And when Blaine Boekhorst kicked truly late in the term, Carlton were up by six points.

But the Eagles had Kennedy up forward, and a gale- force breeze to kick with in the last quarter."[3]

East Perth report[]
