1 M.Hibberd
West Coast held a comfortable lead at halftime and extended it to 34 points early in the third quarter before Essendon charged back hard. The Eagles ran out of steam in the last quarter and couldn't hold back the black and red tide, as the Bombers took the lead before a couple of questionable umpiring decisions quelled any chance of an Eagles comeback. Luke Shuey led West Coast with 27 possessions and in his 150th game Shannon Hurn provided drive from defence with 10 marks and 23 disposals.

Media reports[]
The West Australian[]
"The hosts blitzed the opening five minutes of the clash, returning captain Jobe Watson taking 13 seconds to kick a stellar goal.
Essendon then went from freewheeling to downright foolish - playing on haphazardly, butchering the ball and generally looking bereft of confidence.
Momentum swung during the third term, the Bombers booting five goals in the space of 11 minutes."[1]
The Age[]
"Winderlich's sudden stamp on this game would continue into the last term. First with a behind, then getting on the end of a another surge through the corridor to again put the Dons within a kick. It was Zaharakis who put the Dons in front for the first time since midway through the opening term.
The rest was pure desperation, two sides that might not progress far into September, but which would gladly bust a boiler to at least have the chance to do so. Hill went close for the Eagles with a behind, the last 90 seconds a toss of the coin until the siren sounded the effective end of West Coast's belated finals charge, and for the Dons at least a stay of execution."[2]
The Herald Sun[]
"Essendon survived a first half of kicking inefficiencies so bad that its finals existence was about to be spoken of in the past tense.
But courtesy of an extraordinary turnaround in application and discipline – and some ill-conceived Jeremy McGovern words – unlikely hero Jason Winderlich inspired a spectacular revival for a three-point win almost as unlikely as a week without the Bombers in the headlines.
The Eagles’ season effectively ended when they stopped running and lost control of the centre square after leading by 34 points nine minutes into the third term.
Essendon then managed seven of the closing eight goals to condemn the Eagles to an off-season of what-ifs."[3]
East Perth report[]
Round 21 (16 August)
East Perth gave cellar-dwelling Perth a hiding, winning 28.14.182 to 14.6.90. Brant Colledge kicked 2 goals from 22 possessions and Adam Carter had 27 disposals across the backline.
Appearing for East Perth: Brennan, Carter, Colledge, Maginness, Main, McInnes, Wilson
