Melbourne had suffered some heavy losses in the previous fortnight and looked headed for another when they trailed by 47 at halftime, but made up ground during the third before ultimately going down by eight goals. Young tyro Andrew Gaff was West Coast's best with 33 possessions, with veteran Andrew Embley adding 25 possessions and a goal. Patrick McGinnity was the centre of some unwelcome attention post-match after an ugly altercation with Ricky Petterd on the half-time siren, McGinnity getting suspended for a week for an inappropriate sledge directed at Petterd's mother.

From the papers[]
The Age[]
"In contrast to Melbourne, West Coast has a forest of tall forwards. Generalled by James Frawley, Melbourne's defence worked hard to nullify them. Of the big four's five goals, three were in last quarter junk time. But small forwards Mark LeCras and Mark Nicoski bobbed up with six between them.
Melbourne had big names with little numbers: none of Tom Scully, Trengove, Sylvia, Jack Watts or Aaron Davey had more than 18 touches. They were shown up by Howe and Blease, who between them have played 12 games."[2]
WAFL[]
