West Coast barely showed up against a hungry Fremantle side that recorded its eighth straight win and its second Derby win of the season. The Eagles failed to kick a goal in either the second or third quarters and only a stellar individual effort from Ben Cousins, who kicked three goals from 31 possessions, saved the margin from being even more embarrassing.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Despite the best intentions of Ben Cousins, West Coast lacked the run and sparkle of Fremantle, which had winners and runners all over the ground.

Bell, the catalyst for the team's revival over the past month, played a thinking man's game with astute positioning and diligent use of the ball. His work early in the second term when he was asked to make Chris Judd earn his kicks proved one of the turning points.

Another came in the same term when Sandilands stood like a human roadblock to Sam Butler, who was charging towards his goal. It was a showstopper tackle. On the rebound, Farmer took a mark on the boundary. His decision to line up for goal surprised nobody. About to take his kick, at the last minute he employed a look-away pass to Bell who, apart from Farmer, was the only player who knew what was happening."
