West Coast were never in the hunt against Essendon, who kicked seven goals to one in the opening quarter to put further pressure on embattled coach Ken Judge. The struggling Eagles had no answer to Matthew Lloyd who kicked seven goals for the match, one more than the entire West Coast lineup managed. Chad Fletcher picked up 24 possessions and Peter Matera had 21 as the Eagles farewelled retiring captain Dean Kemp.
