From the papers[]
The Sunday Age[]
"The Eagles had more at stake than their battling opponents. This, after all, was a chance to secure second position and even make a run at the coveted top spot.
But after a below-par first half from both teams, it was the Bulldogs who steeled themselves for the second half with an 11-to-three goal blitz.
Trailing by nine points at half-time, the Bulldogs set up their victory with a six-goal third term, holding their highly fancied opponents to just two points.
The catalyst was a defender who was moved from the half-back line to the forward line, where he sealed the Eagles' fate with three goals. Alan Thorpe would be known to a handful of Footscray fans and followers of Oakleigh in the VFA, but yesterday he eluded the best defence in the competition on more than one occasion."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"The Bulldogs had moved to an 11 point lead midway through the third term before half-forward Alan Thorpe booted a great running goal to further inspire his side.
When centre half-forward Chris Grant booted a left foot goal under extreme pressure late in the quarter, the Eagles were down by five goals.
The Eagles were unable to mount a comeback in the last quarter and Footscray booted a further five goals to the Eagles three.
West Coast's day was further soured when McKenna was carried from the field on a stretcher late in the third term with an injury to his right knee."[2]
