West Coast overcame a determined Geelong and a sickening injury to Dwayne Lamb to record a one-point victory and sew up the first minor premiership in the club's history. A snap by Peter Sumich in the dying moments missed but was enough to give the home side the lead. Sumich kicked an inaccurate 5.8 and Scott Watters amassed 31 possessions.

From the papers[]

Canberra Times[]

"West Coast held a seven-point lead going into the final term but the persistance of Geelong's midfield brigade led by Mark Bairstow and the efforts of defender Ken Hinkley enabled the Cats to close within an upset win.

However, the Eagles handed the late Geelong pressure and ensured they would finish the season with the minor premiership and host the first AFL final to be held outside Melbourne.

The Eagles lacked a dominant figure in the battle but did receive sterling service from Scott Watters and Craig Turley plus Mark Hepburn in the ruck duties during the final term."[1]
