West Coast lost in heartbreaking fashion in Queensland, with a second-half fightback falling just short against a Suns side with a sniff of finals. The Eagles looked headed for a blowout loss when they trailed by 37 points just before halftime, but seized momentum in the second half and stormed to within three points with 38 seconds left on the clock. A quick clearance and goal for the Gold Coast closed the door on the comeback, with a goal by Jamaine Jones on the siren restoring the three-point margin. In his 100th AFL game, Tim Kelly bounced back from a horror game against the Saints with 28 possessions and six tackles, and Jack Darling equalled his career-high with six goals.

From the coach[]

"They didn’t (give up), but obviously we didn’t play four quarters. Outside of pride there isn’t a lot at the moment to play for...well in fact there is a lot to play for but you can be mistaken in thinking "just get through the season". So, I think the guys are still playing with the right attitude but unfortunately after the first 15 minutes we lost our way for a quarter and a half. We were unable to stop that momentum and the game sense was not quite there to settle things down a little bit and soak it up a little. We seemed to concede several goals and our field position was a real concern. Half time we adjusted a few things, we got going and we almost grabbed it.

"... I think our contest got better (in the second half), our ability to stay connected around the contest and then we probably matched them in the midfield from a clearance point of view as well. So, the field position issue for us is our biggest issue. When we compete like we did in the second half the ball movement was taking care of itself, then in the last quarter it was just on. The boys were taking risks, they were paying off and sometimes they weren’t so to go down like that was disappointing, but we will get plenty of growth from it.

"...We are still getting growth with some of our younger players and some exposure as well. Jamaine Jones off half back, he seems to be growing in that role well. We tried Luke Shuey in half back as well at stages today and I thought he had a bit of influence. Exposure to O’Neill, who went to Miller - I think Miller still had about 16-odd clearances but he didn’t probably do the same transition things he normally does. Young Foley went to Rankine, mixed results, he’s a pretty good player but Foley stuck to his tasks. We are not wasting this half of the season, we want to keep exposing our players to different situations, we are just not getting rewarded at the moment that’s all."[1]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Jake Waterman’s goal with 38 seconds on the clock dragged the Eagles to within three points. Remarkably, there would still be another two majors to come as Malcolm Rosas sealed it for Gold Coast before Jamaine Jones got a consolation on the final siren.

West Coast were down by five goals at half-time after a catalogue of turnovers caused by shoddy skills by both hand and foot.

With nothing to lose, the second half provided a rare example of their desire for more direct ball movement paying dividends this season as they booted 11 goals to six.

Jack Darling and Mabior Chol were the key men at either end of the ground, domineering figures who finished with 11 goals between them as support acts Izak Rankine and Jack Petruccelle contributed three each."[2]

Reserves[]

The WAFL side has a bye.
