2 B.Grundy (COL)
1 J.De Goey (COL)
Shannon Hurn became the first 300-game West Coast Eagle but his teammates failed to honour him, crumbling to a lowly Collingwood side to put their finals hopes in jeopardy again. At an empty MCG, the Eagles struggled from the outset and trailed by an even 50 points at half-time, having kicked just one goal while allowing the Magpies the run of the ground. Some last-quarter goals reduced the margin but not the embarrassment. Andrew Gaff had a team-high 33 possessions and Jamie Cripps was his side's only multiple goalscorer.

From the coach[]
"Oh look, I thought the first quarter, I don’t know how many inside 50s we had, probably our fair share. No efficiency in the front half and our inability to keep it in our front half was really disappointing. Couldn’t stop their uncontested game and they were running overlap, they made the most of their and we missed our shots. The second quarter was disappointing, really disappointing, it was defensively poor, and offensively there was some poor decisions made as well. And then we chased our tails for the rest of the day. So a really disappointing day altogether.
"(The message at half-time was) Run. Start running. Start defending better. Work together. But I thought the Pies used their brains more than we did as well, with their ball movement, and we didn’t, so we gave them some clarity at half-time. But we shouldn’t need to, we’re better than that so we walk away disappointed, we’ll learn from it, like we do always, but we’re going to review it.
"...The failure to execute, our instructions, the way that we play. Defensively, obviously they were controlling the ball a little bit. Uncontested marks, they had 150 for the day, and if they’re inside the middle of the play, they’re hard to defend. So, I thought our transition was poor, and we got outrun."[2]
From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"The Eagles won the clearance and contested ball counts in the first-half but had no answer to Collingwood’s devastating dash and dare.
The Pies’ ability to run and handball through the corridor — combined with some neat foot skills — set them up, with three of their four goals in the opening term starting from defensive half chains.
When West Coast had the ball, they looked powerless to find a way through a disciplined black and white zone and often butchered the ball when they did.
There was no response from the visitors in the second stanza, as Collingwood piled on six goals to one to kill the contest."[3]
The Age[]
"The Magpies’ flair was built on the back of pressure as they did not give the Eagles’ midfielders space to hit forward targets. Too many times the Eagles went backwards to find space rather than trusting the contest ahead of the ball and the defensive effort of high-profile players such as Tim Kelly, Andrew Gaff and Nic Naitanui were well below AFL standard.
A smother from Adams at a defensive stoppage in the second quarter when Kelly tried to snap showed what two-way football was about and the young players such as Ollie Henry – who clunked several strong marks – Finley Macrae, Trent Bianco and Jack Ginnivan contributed, with Ginnivan kicking his first AFL goal.
Trey Ruscoe has also found a home across half back, with his ball use sharp and creative and Isaac Quaynor kicked his first goal in his 34th game."[4]
Reserves[]
