West Coast banked an easy four points in a spiteful Derby, but post-match headlines were dominated by Andrew Gaff's punch that broke the jaw of Docker Andrew Brayshaw in the third term. The Eagles extended their lead at every change and led by as much as 70 points during the final term as tempers spilled over on a number of occasions. Elliot Yeo won the renamed Glendinning-Allan Medal with 26 possessions and two goals and Brad Sheppard also had 26 touches along with 12 marks as he achieved life membership.

From the coach[]

"It's not my position to comment, all I know is that Andrew is quite upset, obviously he is really thinking about Brayshaw and Brayshaw's family. So he's not feeling great at the moment. One thing I do know is Andrew's character and who he is as a person and a player can't be questioned. So yeah, we are working through it, and what will be will be in the next few days.

"...I think it was pretty fierce there and contested there for a while but in the end we broke it open and we punished them on the scoreboard. So the goals we conceded were from 50m penalties and free kicks so we will look at the game from a review point of view pretty happy with what we did.

"Too many free kicks for us. Like I said, they probably conceded five goals from 50m penalties, so part of my rationale for coming down (to the bench) was to settle the players down. So, both teams were probably sticking up for their mates, so that in the end makes for entertainment and it's hard to begrudge your players not to stand up for each other. But we lost control a little bit there for five minutes and if it was an important period of the game or if it was closer then I think we would have been a lot more concerned than what we were."[1]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Few players realised what had happened at first but the reaction was both swift and persistent once they did.

Dockers and Eagles were both getting into each other at the next re-start, and when Brandon Matera copped some heavy contact at half-forward a melee broke out between almost everyone on the ground.

Once that was settled there was head contact between Lachie Neale and Liam Ryan which threatened to kick things off again.

After the three-quarter time break it was on again."[2]

The Age[]

"Fremantle kicked the first goal of the game and with David Mundy dominating the stoppages, had several opportunities to open a small lead. But they slaughtered those chances.

West Coast kicked the next five goals, without really taking control of the contest, to lead by 28-points midway through the second term.

Then the Eagles gained momentum.

Jack Darling booted four goals in his best performance since his return from an ankle injury; while Gaff finished with 33 touches."[3]

East Perth report[]

East Perth's finals hopes hung by a knife's edge when they fell to Peel by 25 points at a wet and windy Rushton Park, the Thunder taking control of the game with seven unanswered goals in the second term. Appearing for East Perth: Ah Chee, Ainsworth, M.Allen, O.Allen, Brander, Brayshaw, Mutimer, Olango, Partington, Rotham, Sheed, Waterman, Watson.
