West Coast overcame some key outs and a rampant last quarter from the Dockers to win the top-of-the-table clash and break a run of six straight Derby defeats. The Eagles stunned Fremantle early, opening up a big lead at the first break and holding pace with the Dockers in the next two terms, before holding on as Freo mounted a late charge to close within a few goals. Josh Hill was awarded the Ross Glendinning Medal for his four-goal, 20-possession game, and Matt Rosa had a team-high 24 possessions.

Both sides started as named, despite whispers that Dockers skipper Matthew Pavlich would pull out late. McGinnity and Hayden Crozier started as subs.

"It was a real good gutsy win. We are really proud of our players, Last week we probably let it slip in the last quarter and they came pretty hard, Freo, as I'm sure you have all just seen. To finish off like we did - and we lost a few soldiers - to hold on was really pleasing and we will move on pretty quick but it was a good win.

"I think it was a real collective effort. Our forward line fighting down one or two most of the day it was critical that they made a contest, Our midfielders stood up when it really mattered. The first quarter start, our backs against the wall from the beginning with a few players out. I don't want to single anyone out. Our back six are fighting pretty light on for height, they just got it done. Collectively I was really proud.

"The challenge for us is can we stand up against these types of sides - and there was a little bit more to play for in terms of the ladder so we get that. But for our players it builds our belief. Regardless of the fact that it is a derby, it is just the belief that our players are starting to build and we are playing our way and it stands up."

"Josh Kennedy roosted the game’s opening major from 55m to set the tone early.

The effort was raised by Mark Hutchings, who nailed a goal on the run from deep in the right boundary pocket before Luke Shuey used his own turn of pace to burn off several Fremantle opponents and nail their third.

The salvo had the Dockers rattled, with Silvagni and Matthew Pavlich both dropping straightforward marks at either end of the ground.

Scott Lycett didn’t make the same mistake.

He pulled down a contested grab and took advantage of some slack defending to play on and ram home West Coast’s fourth major 13 minutes into the quarter."

"Michael Johnson was returning for his first game since round 10, while Luke McPharlin was forced out of the side late in the week due to a cork.

And as a result the Eagles were able to find multiple goal scorers, particularly early. A 20-7 free kicks count in the first half also helped.

Andrew Gaff, Chris Masten and Mark Hutchings started the game full of running and had 22 touches between them in the opening term. For Fremantle, Danyle Pearce, Nat Fyfe and Michael Barlow had only five between them."

East Perth strolled to a 32-point win over Fremantle's host club Peel at Rushton Park. Kane Lucas was among the Royals' best with 23 possessions and 10 tackles, and Malcolm Karpany continued some good recent form with 18 disposals.
