For the second straight week West Coast turned in their best performance of the season and kept their slim finals chances alive with a demolition job on Collingwood. The Eagles consistently controlled the ball from stoppages and streamed through the corridor, with smooth ball movement that was sadly lacking earlier in the season. The Magpies fought back from a sizeable quarter-time deficit to trail by just 17 points at the half, but West Coast smashed the game open with six straight goals in the third quarter. Matt Priddis had 42 disposals, 12 clearances, 7 tackles and a goal in a herculean effort, but had plenty of helpers as five teammates recorded 30-plus possessions. Scott Lycett kicked four goals in a forward role.

From the coach[]

"The ball movement has been a bit of a focus of ours throughout the year but (what) overrides that is how we get it. I am not even sure about how the contested ball looked in the end but it felt like we won the contests that mattered.

"It has been a bit of a process throughout the year to find the balance with ball movement. Sometimes if you have got extra numbers you want to use them, sometimes you want to go quick. Sometimes you are not feeling great, injuries, all that sort of thing but it feels like we are getting better at finding the balance for what the game is telling us. It is my job to educate them on when it is time to go quick and adventurous or when we need to use an extra number out here.

"We wanted to hunt today. It (the message at half-time) was to continue that theme. It is not too complicated. It felt like we were a little bit tired and they were running on top of the ground. We had a taller side and then we lost Ellis."[1]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"The Pies were struggling to get their hands on the ball as the Eagles dominated clearances and possession, continually pumping the ball into their forward arc to give their dangerous big men a chance as the home side booted four of the first five majors to take a handy lead just 17 minutes in.

But Sam Dwyer kicked a clever goal as Ellis suffered what appeared to be a serious injury after courageously going back with the flight in a marking contest.

But West Coast received two free kicks inside forward 50m in the final 30 seconds of the quarter and Luke Shuey and Josh Kennedy both converted as they made it a decisive 28-point margin at the first break.

Sheed got his chance earlier than first thought, with Ellis subbed out during the break, but Collingwood got the start they wanted when the Eagles defenders overcommitted in a marking contest, allowing Tim Broomhead to run into an open goal.

The Pies were right back in the contest, evening up the clearances and winning a lot more of the hard ball, but West Coast were able to answer each time they broke through for a goal to the halfway mark of the term."[2]

The Age[]

"But it was the Eagles who dominated the third term, booting 6.3 to the Pies’ 1.2 – and the game was over.

Jamie Elliott started the final term in terrific style, with goal just 35 seconds after the siren – in a piece of play in which he had the ball three times.

But their next goal came 20 minutes later – as Cloke ran into an open goal when he finally found some space inside 50m.

In between those highlights, Darling booted three goals in 12 minutes and Matt Priddis hit the scoreboard to cap off a dominant performance."[3]

East Perth report[]

Round 20 (9 August)

In Bunbury, Swan Districts kept pace with East Perth until half-time but the Royals asserted their dominance in the second half and could have been further ahead with better accuracy, eventually winning 14.22.106 to 11.5.71. Will Maginness kicked 3 goals from 19 possessions and Jacob Brennan notched up 24 disposals.
