West Coast caught the Bombers at the end of a turbulent week, even by their 2013 standards, with coach James Hird forced to deny rumours he would resign in the lead-up to the clash. The Eagles put their foot squarely on Essendon's throat, turning a narrow half-time lead into a 53-point blowout at the final siren. Mark LeCras went off with a chest injury (that later turned out to be a broken rib) before halftime but returned to kick 5 second-half goals, and Sharrod Wellingham added two goals from 24 possessions.

From the papers[]
The Age[]
"Up forward the Bombers were impotent, losing Jason Winderlich after two early goals to a hamstring issue, and getting nothing out of Scott Gumbleton or Tom Bellchambers as Mitch Brown and Darren Glass stood tall.
Gumbleton was hampered by what Hird reported was a very bad early corky, and after not touching the ball in the first quarter his day went downhill from there. Bronx cheers greeted his few second-half possessions, and turned to laughter when he kicked the ball into the point post from two metres away.
From the outset the portents were gloomy. Andrew Gaff goaled with the first kick of the game after a 50-metre penalty, Dustin Fletcher was denied a free despite stripping Scott Lycett of the ball, and Josh Hill swooped amid goalmouth confusion. Even Watson handballed to nobody."[1]
PerthNow[]
"LeCras and his third term heroics were matched with stunning support from boom recruit Sharrod Weelingham who snuffed out the Bombers with two classy running goals and important composure around congestion in tandem with other big ball-winners Matt Priddis and Chris Masten.
A badly fading Bombers were kept within a remote hope of a come-from-behind win with a courageous third term resistance from recruit Brendon Goddard in a near best-on-ground outing but West Coast ran away with the vital premiership points with a relentless final term.
The lead changed six times through the first half after West Coast slammed on two goals in the opening 90 seconds and then an intensity of a crucial clash to determine finals destiny for both outfits forced some horrific turnovers at times."[2]
