West Coast were celebrating the 20th anniversary of the 1992 premiership win over the Cats, and marked the occasion with a stirring come-from-behind win on a Friday night classic. The game had plenty of controversy, with umpires paying no less than nine deliberate out-of-bounds frees, Geelong coach Chris Scott accusing Eagles fans of booing as big Tom Hawkins was stretchered off the ground and Cats captain Joel Selwood reported for shoving older brother Adam. Dean Cox was at his brilliant best with 45 hitouts and three goals, ably supported by Nic Naitanui and Daniel Kerr.

"There was a lot of good stuff out of the game. Geelong were up and going early. They've worked really hard on their starts. They threw everything into the game early. We weathered it to a degree. They were on top early, there's no doubt about that. They probably played better footy in the first quarter, but over the next three quarters I thought it took us a long time to wear them down, but I think we were on top marginally over the big period of the game.

"The work rate we talked about at quarter time wasn't too bad, but we could be smarter with the way we were playing. Looking at what Geelong were doing, a couple of things that we asked players to do they did extremely well.

"It's always hard to judge things after a game, how guys have performed. I thought the team performed really well. Coxy's a senior leader at this footy club, he has been for a long time. He's a champion player, so we don't get surprised by what he does. And Nic's still developing and he's learning from one of the best, which is a bonus for us."

"It took the expertise of champion big man Dean Cox and ground-level offsider Daniel Kerr to get the Eagles home.

It was a great match that could have done without the interference of overzealous umpires Matt Stevic, Justin Schmidt and Troy Pannell, who paid what must have been a record nine deliberate out-of-bounds free kicks, including two in the tense dying minutes as the undermanned Cats tried desperately tried to bridge the gap.

In the end, they came up just short. Cox reigned supreme in the ruck and drifted forward to kick three goals. His combination with Nic Naitanui eventually told on Geelong big men Orren Stephenson and Josh Walker.

Kerr overcame the early midfield dominance of Steve Johnson to be the best midfielder on the ground with 29 possessions, seconding late support from Andrew Gaff, Luke Shuey and Matt Priddis."

"Adam Selwood tried his best to clean up Joel Selwood with a big hip and shoulder that sent both brothers crashing to the ground.

Adam and Joel hit their head on the ground in the bump, but Joel got up quickly to give Adam an angry shove while the older brother was still lying on the ground trying to regain his senses.

Johnson tallied 19 possessions and 10 clearances in the opening half to give Geelong a 14-point lead at the long break, but the Eagles hit back in the third term to close the margin to one point with one quarter remaining.

And with Cox and Naitanui in sublime touch, the Eagles did enough to get over the line."

"The Cats led by 16 points at quarter-time and 14 at the main break, before the Eagles fought back in the third term.

Kerr goaled with the first kick of the third term, after the Cats were penalised 50m when they played on, thinking they had possession after the umpire signalled the wrong way.

Veteran James Podsiadly kicked his second and third goals to ensure the Cats kept their noses in front, but when Andrew Gaff snapped out of a pack in the 25th minute the scores were level.

The Eagles were winning more of the ball and threatening to take the lead, but it was the Cats up by a point at the final quarter, setting the scene for a grandstand finish."
