Reigning premiers Brisbane inflicted West Coast's third straight defeat and knocked the visitors out of the top eight with a dominant display. The Eagles took an early advantage but Brisbane had kicked six goals by quarter-time and thereafter extended their lead at every break to finish 47 points ahead. Peter Matera worked hard in his 250th game to finish with 22 possessions but too many of his teammates were below par.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"West Coast ultimately struggled at the defensive end, where Michael Voss equalled his career best with a five-goal haul, further proof he is approaching peak condition again after that osteitis pubis problem. Voss shared goalkicking honours with Akermanis, who recovered from the early physical attention.

With full forward Alastair Lynch (suspended) to return this week, the big bonus for Brisane was Jonathan Brown's best game of the season after returning from suspension. He finished with 25 possessions and forced Glen Jakovich to the bench and then the other end of the ground.

Peter Matera, fittingly, was a real warrior, finishing the leading possession winner for the Eagles in his 250th match, but he did not have a lot of support.

Lions Luke Power and the Scott brothers worked well through the middle, as was Shaun Hart, whose shadowing of Ben Cousins retarded the Eagles' midfield in generating much drive."[1]
